If this is your first visit to our site, then welcome! If you are a repeat visitor, welcome back. In this section we provide information on tobacconist certification, our philosopy, the name “Victory Cigars” and our building’s history.
Certified Tobacconists
The most common thing we hear from our customers is, “ Why aren’t your cigars covered up like all the other stores?” That’s because we are a certified tobacconist; this designation allows us to provide our customers with a complete view of our products. There is no shopping from a binder in our store (unless we’re ordering something special for you). There is just a glorious walk-in humidor for you to enter and browse. Approximately 40% of our cigars are Cuban; the balance are from Honduras, Dominica, Nicaragua, Mexico and other countries.
Victory Cigars’ Philosophy
We truly appreciate your business at Victory Cigars. No matter what your need we’ll strive to ensure that you become, and remain, a satisfied and loyal customer.
Our philosophy is simple: we want to make you feel that you have found a place to call a home away from home. And we want you to have confidence that we’ll stock your favourite brands and that we’ll always have them in the freshest condition.
We will provide you with the best selection and service at the best prices.
We won’t ever rush your purchase, nor will we spend less time with you if you have a limited amount to spend.
We believe that we have a duty to uphold the tradition of the professional tobacconist.
We hope you will come and visit us if you haven’t already!
Why “Victory Cigars”?
Victory Cigars was founded in 2009. The name “Victory” was chosen for several reasons. The word’s triumphant meaning is fitting to describe the efforts the residents of Oshawa have made to restore the downtown to its former grandeur. Whether it’s the Oshawa Generals winning in the General Motors Centre or a lawyer being victorious in the new courthouse, “Victory” aptly summarizes the can-do attitude in downtown Oshawa. And speaking of victory, the owners of Victory Cigars were thrilled to be named Best New Enterprise of 2010 by the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce!
There is another reason for selecting the name Victory Cigars. The shop has adopted Admiral Horatio Nelson as its patron and there is a portrait of Nelson in the store. In 1759, two hundred and fifty years before Victory Cigars opened, the keel of Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory was laid. As commander, Nelson went on to defeat the combined French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This victory, during which Nelson was killed, prevented the invasion of Britain by Napoleon; had Nelson been defeated, the course of history would have been altered, and Canada may not have become the country it is today. Our immediate family includes a great Uncle who was a submariner in the Royal Navy; legend has it that one of his relatives was a gunner on the HMS Victory. So that’s the story behind the shop’s name. (As a side note, during 2010 we celebrated our first year of operation, the same year Canada’s Navy celebrated its centenary).
