European Cigar Journal ranked Oliva as the Nicaraguan Brand of the Year in 2009. This is the company that has finished in the Top 25 Cigars of the Year four times in the past five years. So if you have not smoked an Oliva cigar, now is your chance.
The Oliva family have a long history in the cigar business. Melanio Oliva first grew tobacco in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba in 1886. His descendants managed the Oliva family fields for several decades, until the Cuban Revolution occurred. As communists overran Cuba Gilberto traveled in search of soil that would yield tobacco with Cuban taste. He finally settled in Nicaragua and the rest, as they say, is history. Today Gilberto and his family are Nicaragua’s second largest growers of Cuban-seed tobacco.
The Cigar of the Week is the Oliva Serie O Sun Grown Robusto, a medium-bodied 5×50 Nicaraguan Puro. The Serie O is made in the original Cuban tradition of growing the same Habano seed in diverse regions of the country to produce a distinct blend. The blend for the Series O is achieved by growing Habano in Esteli, Condega and Jalapa Valley. The result is a cigar with notes of spice and rich cedar.
