St. Patrick’s Day Cigar by Alec Bradley
We can’t believe it: the cigars in this box are actually green. Alan Rubin (CEO of Alec Bradley) has had quite the year, coming off the success of the Prensado as cigar of the year for 2011 … but following it up with a green cigar? It’s one of those things that are so crazy that it just works.
Introducing the Black Market Filthy Hooligan Toro, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. The green hue is the result of a candela wrapper. These have been selling like hotcakes so be forewarned: if you don’t act quickly they’ll disappear faster than a Leprechaun, because Alec Bradley only produced 2000 boxes world-wide. If you’re interested, a Filthy Hooligan Toro will set you back $12.49.
Cigar of the Week: Flor de Copan Belicoso
Flor de Copan cigars are made by hand in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras. This hillside region is where Mayan Indians once grew tobacco and it remains a key tobacco-farming region in Honduras.
The tobacco used for these cigars is of Cuban origin (Vuelta Abajo region), brought to Honduras in 1962 and since grown in Santa Rosa, El Paraiso and Santa Barbara. The cigars are made in the Flor de Copan cigar factory once responsible for Zino, Fellipe Gregorio and Don Melo prior to its purchase by Altadis in 1997. The factory also produces the Santa Rosa line which was born there in 1964. Output of the factory is a staggering 20 million sticks per year. The brand is distinguished by its highly attractive packaging, cedar wrapped natural cigars and the gold rose – the “Mark of Distinction”. The cigars feature an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper with light spice and wood flavours.
This cigar is probably the best selling Belicoso at Victory Cigars because it hits a real niche in the cigar market: it has a big ring gauge (it’s 6×54) and produces a ton of fragrant smoke, yet it is a mild cigar. Spring is coming and with the warmer weather it’s possible to go outside and enjoy a big cigar without losing appendages due to frostbite. So treat yourself to a big cigar this week: the Flor de Copan Belicoso is just $11.35 at Victory Cigars.
Perdomo Cigars n’ Hockey Event
The centre of the cigar universe these days is in Esteli Nicaragua, which happens to be home base for Perdomo Cigars. Since we visited there in January we’ve been enthralled with their Lot 23 and 20th Anniversary Cigars. Now you have the chance to sample these amazing cigars.
On Thursday March 21st come to Victory Cigars. We’ll be watching the Leafs take on Buffalo, and learning a thing or two about Perdomo Cigars. And for $20.00 you’ll get one of each of the aforementioned cigars; considering that the 20th Anniversary Robusto costs $21 itself we think you’ll agree that this is a great package. You must RSVP by email (info@victorycigars.ca) or telephone (905-443-0193) as tickets for this event are limited.
Classic Albums Live: AC/DC Back in Black
If you lived in Toronto in the 1930’s and wanted to leave town and be entertained, the logical destination was downtown Oshawa. Yes, Oshawa. Along with the Marks Brothers Theater, the Biltmore and the Genosha Hotel, the Regent Theatre was part of a group of incredible venues that attracted visitors from all over Canada. According to the Oshawa Historical Society: “It was reported in 1927, that the annual attendance at the (Regent) theatre during the past fiscal year had reached over half a million people. As part of the Canadian Famous Player’s chain for most of its existence, the theatre obtained many of the best offerings of the film world.”
Imagine 10,000 people per week attending the movies in downtown Oshawa! Most of these venues have been lost to the passage of time but thankfully, the Regent Concert Theatre in downtown Oshawa has been lovingly renovated by the fine folks at UOIT. Recently, there have been some pretty cool live shows at the venue. We saw one last fall called Classic Albums Live: Dark Side of the Moon. In a word, it was amazing. The troupe took a very difficult album and played it flawlessly. So we’re pumped to hear that they are now going to do the same thing with AC/DC’s Back in Black on Friday May 3rd. If you
Back In Black is the second highest selling album of all time and contains such mega-hits as Hells Bells, You Shook Me All Night Long, Shoot To Thrill and the title song, among others. We spoke with the folks at the Regent and are securing a block of tickets to see this recreation of the album. Now, we are offering a package to you that includes a ticket to the show; a pre-show warmup at the shop including a burger and beverage; and two fabulous cigars, including one that will be exclusively released just for those of you that attend the show.
The entire package costs just $75 including HST but you have to decide by next Wednesday (March 20th) as we only have limited tickets available. You can reserve your tickets by phone with a credit card and pick them up on the day of the event. Just call us at 905-443-0193 to secure your spot. Please note as well that the Regent is a licensed venue and permits you to have cocktails during the show, so you might want to arrange a designated driver for the night of the event.
