About Romeo y Julieta Cigars
Romeo y Julieta cigars have one of the richest histories in Cuba’s storied cigar tradition. Founded in 1875 by Inocencio Alvarez and Manín García, the brand was named after Shakespeare’s famous lovers, reflecting both European sophistication and Cuban craftsmanship. The cigars quickly gained attention for their consistent quality and wide variety of personalized cigar bands, which became a hallmark of the brand. At its peak, Romeo y Julieta produced thousands of custom bands for wealthy clients who wanted their names or crests printed on the cigars they smoked.
The brand’s golden age truly began in the early 20th century when José “Pepín” Rodríguez Fernández, a wealthy businessman, took over operations. Under his leadership, Romeo y Julieta became an international symbol of luxury, winning awards at exhibitions and becoming a favorite among Europe’s elite. Winston Churchill famously visited Havana in 1946 and developed such a fondness for the cigars that the brand later named its most iconic size—the Churchill—after him.
Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the brand was nationalized under Fidel Castro’s government. Production continued in Havana, but the company also split, with non-Cuban versions later being manufactured in the Dominican Republic for international markets. Despite this division, Cuban-made Romeo y Julieta cigars retained their prestige, maintaining the traditional craftsmanship and earthy, medium-bodied flavor profile that made them famous.
Today, Romeo y Julieta remains one of Cuba’s most recognized cigar brands. Its legacy blends history, politics, and culture, with every cigar carrying a sense of timeless tradition. From aristocrats to modern aficionados, smoking a Romeo y Julieta is more than an indulgence—it is a connection to Cuba’s enduring artistry and one of the most storied legacies in the world of cigars.
