The brand was created in 1969 in Cuba and named after the historic colonial city of Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the island’s southern coast. The cigars were first produced at the famous El Laguito factory in Havana, the same factory responsible for another legendary Cuban brand, Cohiba.
For nearly three decades, Trinidad cigars were not available for purchase by the public. Instead, they were produced in small quantities and used by the Cuban government as diplomatic gifts for visiting heads of state and important international guests. Because of this exclusivity, the brand became something of a legend among cigar enthusiasts, whispered about but rarely seen outside official circles.
It was not until 1998 that Trinidad cigars were officially released for public sale. The debut took place in Havana at the Habana Libre Hotel, where the Fundadores was introduced as the first commercially available size.
