About Villiger Cigars

Founded in 1888 in the small Swiss village of Pfeffikon by Jean Villiger and his wife Louise, Villiger began as a home-run cigar operation crafting “Villiger Stumpen.” After Jean’s early passing in 1902, Louise took the reins, launching the innovative Villiger Kiel—the first cigar with a goose-quill mouthpiece—in 1907.

In 1910, Louise established Villiger Söhne GmbH in Germany, setting the stage for international expansion. In 1918, the company passed to their sons, Max and Hans, who spearheaded growth through additional factories and successful products like Rio 6 and Villiger Export.

While factories in Munich were destroyed in World War II, Villiger rebounded post-war under the leadership of Heinrich Villiger, who joined the firm in the early 1950s and assumed management in 1954. The 1970s saw Villiger become the only cigar maker to sponsor a Formula 1 team, highlighting its bold marketing prowess.

The late 20th century brought global reach—acknowledgement of Cuban tobacco heritage, distribution ventures, and the founding of subsidiaries in Indonesia (1999), the USA (2002), France (2006), and a Brazilian factory in 2013.

In 2008, Villiger launched its first premium handmade cigar, the Villiger 1888, to commemorate its 120th anniversary—personally blended by Heinrich Villiger. In 2021, the company inaugurated “Villiger de Nicaragua,” a modern factory near Estelí, producing around 16 cigar brands with over 100 skilled employees.

Today, Villiger Söhne AG remains family-owned—with revenues exceeding US $200 million and over 1,500 employees—producing both machine-made and premium handmade cigars across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
