July 18th – Aw Shucks!
Did you know that Shrimp Cocktail is the only restaurant in the area that has fresh oysters on the half shell as a regular menu item? These folks know seafood, and there is no better time to enjoy fresh oysters than during the summer. On July 18th (that’s this Wednesday) we are going to Shrimp Cocktail once again for a night of sumptuous food and wine – only this time, we’re going to be on the patio! This means tickets for this event are limited.
Our event will centre on an oyster bar. While you wait, fresh market oysters will be expertly shucked and served with an array of condiments including fresh horseradish, Tabasco or lemon juice, to name a few (if you are really adventurous then dribble a half shot of single malt Scotch onto the oyster). There will also be wines to taste and other hors d’oeuvres to sample … let’s see, are we missing something? Of course – cigars! You will also get a couple of Cuban cigars to enjoy at the event. (We’ll let the cat out of the bag and tell you that one of the cigars is the Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill; this cigar regularly retails for over $30 by itself!)
Tickets are on sale now and cost $75 including HST. The event will run from 5:30 until 7:30, rain or shine. Don’t miss this chance to mingle with other aficionados of fine food, wine and cigars. Get your tickets at Shrimp Cocktail (www.ShrimpCocktailCafe.com) or Victory Cigars.
Cigar of the Week: The NUB Sun Grown
This week’s featured cigar is a product of Studio Tobac. Studio Tobac was born within the Oliva Cigar Company in 2007 and is a collection of the company’s most innovative minds. Studio Tobac consists of an Executive Board of Directors, a Studio Ambassador, an advisory board, and a General Membership.
For over three years the Studio has conceived innovative projects like the renowned NUB cigar, a cigar which introduced a complete new format in premium handmade cigars to the industry. (The Studio also successfully produced the CAIN cigar, the only straight ligero cigar in the world). These and many more projects exist within the portfolio of Studio Tobac.
Considered one of the most innovative cigar concepts, NUB is a line of short, stout and well-filled smokes blended to capture the perfect essence of a cigar. These cigars are completely made by hand with densely packed long filler, allowing each stick to burn slowly while maintaining a smoking time comparable to conventional sizes ranging from robusto to presidente.
The featured cigar this week is the NUB Sun Grown 4×60, a fireplug of a cigar. Using the wrapper of choice for Cuban cigar makers, the Sun Grown has a robust, full-bodied flavour. Rolled as a NUB, the Sun Grown’s bold spice softens to create a delicious new version of the famous leaf. The NUB Sun Grown 460 is wrapped with a Habano leaf; the filler and binder are both from Nicaragua. The feature price for the NUB Sun Grown 460 is $13.99.
Cigar of the Month
European Cigar Journal ranked Oliva as the Nicaraguan Brand of the Year in 2009. This is the company that has finished in the Top 25 Cigars of the Year four times in the past five years. So if you have not smoked an Oliva cigar, now is your chance. The Cigar of the Month is the Oliva Serie V Belicoso, a cigar that should definitely be on your summer smoking list. This is Oliva’s flagship cigar (and rumour has it that the company will soon be rolling a version of this in Miami, helping to resurrect Florida’s cigar industry). Serie V is a complex blend of Nicaraguan long filler tobaccos, blended with specially fermented Jalapa Valley ligero, and finished with a high priming Habano Sun Grown Wrapper. This cigar is blended to deliver full body taste while maintaining an unparalleled smoothness. This blend exhibits complex tobacco flavours with rich coffee and dark chocolate tones. A subtle and well-balanced spice is present throughout. The Serie V is full-bodied and the price of this feature is $12.99.
