Cigar of the Week: H. Upmann Magnum 50
The word “Magnum” is just about the coolest word in the English language (OK, it’s originally from Latin – point made). But how can you not love all things Magnum? There are just so many cool instances of the word in everyday use. There’s Magnum PI … the Smith & Wesson Magnum Revolver … the Magnum XL-200 (a roller coaster at Cedar Point) … Magnum hops, used for beer brewing … and Moses Magnum, a villain in Marvel Comics.
Which brings us to this week’s feature cigar, the H. Upmann Magnum 50 from Cuba. The Magnum 50 is a big cigar; its dimensions are 6.25 x 50. The flavour profile for this cigar is medium and it has a smooth, effortless draw with lots of smoke. The feature price is $24.99.
At Victory Cigars, we often argue about which cigars are the best we’ve smoked; this one is always in the top five. (Just look at the name: Magnum is Latin for “great”.) This week’s weather forecast makes it the perfect time for you to buy a Magnum 50 because this cigar is an hour-long commitment. Celebrate like Daddy Warbucks: it’s still warm enough outside to be big cigar weather.
Last fall we offered one of Upmann’s other vitolas as a feature cigar; at that time, we gave a bit of a history of the brand. Here it is again in case you missed it:
H. Upmann is among the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. Banker Herman Upmann opened the first branch office in Havana which provided ample opportunity to send cigars home to Europe. The possibilities of a commercial endeavour became clear to Upmann and in 1844 he invested in a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was launched. In 1922 both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt. A British firm, J. Frankau & Co., bought the brand name and continued production until 1935, when the company was sold to the recently established Menéndez y García Co., makers of the Montecristo brand. This new ownership group continued production of H. Upmann cigars until the nationalization of the tobacco industry after the Cuban Revolution.
A popular legend holds that the favourite cigar of US President John F. Kennedy was the Petit Upmann, and that the night before the embargo was signed, he had aide Pierre Salinger procure every box he could gather from Washington, DC tobacconists, for a total of 1,200 of his favourite cigars!
